Finnish developer Remedy Entertainment has announced today that CONTROL Resonant is the fastest-selling game in its 31-plus-year history. CEO Jean-Charles Gaudechon called it a "defining milestone" for the company, as the first self-published Remedy game of this scale.
CONTROL Resonant was a massive contributor to the studio's positive quarter, which saw revenue more than triple compared to last year's period. The game has sold over one million units as of October 15.
Gaudechon highlighted several positive stats, including an 83 Metacritic score from critics, an 8.8 Metacritic user score, and even more positive user ratings on Steam (91%) and PlayStation 5 (4.7/5), noting the studio's satisfaction with how it turned out:
We see the game as an excellent entry into the large action-RPG genre. We are also pleased with the game's technical performance and the positive commentary over its scalability across a variety of PC hardware which meant a larger audience could enjoy CONTROL Resonant. This is a testament to our in-house Northlight game engine, which enables the distinctive look and feel that has come to define Remedy’s games.
The CEO provided interesting data on the sales, revealing that the United States accounted for nearly half of the game's sales. Moreover, almost 50% of the players didn't buy the original title, which bodes well for the franchise and the studio as a whole.
Gaudechon ended his statement by stating Remedy's new objective: getting CONTROL Resonant into the hands of more players to fully capitalize on its sales potential. This likely means various marketing and discount activities, rather than a potential port to the Nintendo Switch 2, though that doesn't mean the latter will never happen.
In my review of the game, I rated it 8 out of 10:
Remedy bet everything on risky changes with CONTROL Resonant: a new genre, a new protagonist, and even a new environment. Most of them work, making this sequel well worth purchasing for fans of the studio and the IP, but it's also clear that Remedy is not quite an expert at making open world action RPGs, as most shortcomings fall squarely in that category.
