Yenning for more.
Nintendo's latest financial earnings report is here, revealing healthy software sales thanks to the enormously popular Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream. Sales of Switch 2 hardware, however, are down.
As per Nintendo's 2nd Quarter fiscal earnings report, focusing on the three-month period ending 30th September 2026, Switch 2 hardware registered a big drop in sales during the first half of the current financial year (FY27).
Over that period, Nintendo sold 6.49m Switch 2 units and 1.27m units of the original Switch - equating to a 37.4 percent decline for Switch 2 and 32.7 percent decline for Switch 1 compared to the same period last year. Nintendo had previously forecast a decline in hardware sales, and the company still expects to sell 16.50m Switch 2 units by the end of the current fiscal year.
Nintendo software sales, on the other hand, saw a big year-on-year boost of 18.8 percent on Switch 2 (to 24.49m units) and a smaller increase of 6.8 percent on Switch 1. That's all thanks to the release of several popular first- and third-party titles over the first half of FY27. Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream was by far the most successful game with 8.81m units sold, followed by Rhythm Heaven Groove at 2.89m. Splatoon Raiders (the only Switch 2 exclusive of the three) sold 2.42m. Nintendo also highlighted a 60.5 percent year-on-year increase in digital game sales.
The increase in software unit sales and the "continued weakness of the Yen" couldn't prevent the overall business from declining by 15.3 percent year-on-year, however.
Other remaining releases in Nintendo' s current fiscal year include The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake (which launches today and was awarded five stars in Eurogamer's review), Switch 2 re-releases of Pikmin 2 and Xenoblade Chronicles 3, as well as Metroid Ravenous, which arrives early in 2027.
