Godzilla Minus Zero is finally here. The latest installment in this larger-than-life monster series is getting a wide release in the U.S. starting today. Toho marked the occasion by sharing the film’s final trailer, which gives us a look at one of Godzilla’s greatest foes, King Ghidorah.
Set in 1949 Japan, two years after the events of Godzilla Minus One, the story picks up with former kamikaze pilot Kōichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki) and his wife Noriko (Minami Hamabe) looking after their daughter, Akiko (Sae Nagatani). Despite seemingly being defeated in the previous film, Godzilla has somehow returned (as he tends to do). Even worse, there’s a new monster in town: King Ghidorah. The three-headed monstrosity’s new design is properly terrifying.
When did King Ghidorah first appear?
King Ghidorah is one of Godzilla’s greatest and oldest foes, having first appeared in 1964 in the fifth Godzilla movie, Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster. Inspired by the mythological Japanese dragon Yamata no Orochi, he has consistently been portrayed as Godzilla’s archenemy. Ghidorah can fly, shoot lighting, and strangle foes with his multiple necks.
How has Godzilla Minus Zero been received so far?
Godzilla Minus Zero is already off to a hot start. The film opened in Japan on Nov. 3 and set a record for the biggest opening day for a live-action movie in the country's history. By some estimates, the flick is expected to bring in around $60 million globally in its first weekend, an impressive figure for a non-English-language movie.
Minus Zero has been rated nearly as well as its predecessor, with critics praising its scope, battle sequences, special effects, and characters. The film has a 90% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is not quite as glowing as Godzilla Minus One's 99%, but is still pretty impressive. Minus Zero brings back much of the cast and crew from the previous installment, including director and writer Takashi Yamazaki.
What’s next for Godzilla?
Godzilla fans have been eating well lately as Toho and Legendary Pictures have been taking turns releasing their own Godzilla films. Legendary has Godzilla x Kong: Supernova slated for next year, where Kong and Godzilla will team up against an extraterrestrial foe. The beloved beat ‘em up game Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee was just remastered, and Giancarlo Esposito and Tim Robbins will be joining Wyatt Russell in a prequel to the AppleTV series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
