Sony Santa Monica has just delayed God of War Laufey from its February 16, 2027 date to May 20, 2027. The studio shared the following message as an explanation:

Since the reveal of God of War Laufey in June, we've been deeply grateful to see so much excitement for Faye's journey through the Everywhen. We don't take for granted the trust placed in the studio to make an extraordinary experience worthy of the passion and dedication of our fans.

With this in mind, we've made the decision to delay God of War Laufey's release to May 20th, 2027. We will make the most of each moment until then by putting in the finishing touches and pushing the game to its fullest potential. On behalf of everyone on the team, we appreciate your patience and we'll be back to share more updates soon!

God of War Laufey was revealed at the State of Play on June 2, 2026, though its original February 16, 2027 date was shared during July's San Diego Comic-Con, and pre-orders opened on September 29. The slip to May moves it out of a challenging February window that had become badly congested, as titles displaced by this autumn's release calendar (mostly because of Rockstar's GTA VI) piled into early 2027; so, on that count, it may be good news for those who were looking at the Q1 2027 release calendar and weeping at the sheer amount of triple-A game launches.

Whether polish is the whole story behind the delay is harder to say. Laufey has been weathering controversy since the June reveal, with most of the early backlash directed at Faye replacing Kratos as protagonist, the recurring complaint being a God of War game without the God of War. Faye’s companion Phranque drew criticism of its own, and calls for a boycott citing a supposed feminist agenda eventually prompted actor Vincent D'Onofrio to defend his former Daredevil co-star Deborah Ann Woll, who said she was largely unbothered by the reaction.

The more substantive criticism came in September, when former Naughty Dog game director Bruce Straley cited Laufey to EDGE as an example of what he sees as stagnation across triple-A game design. He apologized on X shortly after for dragging the team into an industry argument, noting his point had been about the sector rather than their work.

For its part, the developer has clarified that God of War Laufey is not a spinoff and that the game has been planned since 2018 as part of the studio's longer arc for the saga, which will eventually lead to a new game with Kratos (and possibly Atreus).

None of that establishes a causal link to the delay, of course. But a game this contested arguably cannot afford a rough launch, and three extra months is cheap insurance against a reception that was always going to be scrutinized more closely than usual.
