It's only been two years since Brandon Sanderson released Wind and Truth, wrapping up the first half of The Stormlight Archive. While the author is plenty busy with several more books and multiple live-action adaptations of his work, Sanderson is already thinking about getting started on the second half of the beloved series. Talking on a Halloween stream (in a pretty great Shrek costume), the fantasy author revealed he's already got a loose release schedule for the next five Stormlight Archive books.
When asked during the stream if The Stormlight Archive would release the last five entries every three years starting in 2031, Sanderson said that timeline is "pretty realistic." Almost immediately, however, the author laid out an even quicker schedule he sees as a possibility. He teased that when the series returns, readers will likely get two or three books released consecutively, each two years apart. The last two would follow "a little after." Sanderson added that he's feeling the urge to get back to writing the series soon, and once he starts he thinks he'll "rip through the first few of them pretty quickly." That's no surprise, considering Sanderson is seemingly always writing and releasing new novels in a number of series within his wider Cosmere universe.
The Stormlight Archive began with The Way of Kings in 2010 and is planned as a ten-book series. The first five books are in their own arc, with the remaining five acting as a sequel to the first half. It has also been confirmed that a big time skip will occur between books five and six. It may seem wild that Sanderson is already planning for The Stormlight Archive to be completed in over a decade, but it makes a lot of sense when you know just how many projects the author is juggling at all times.
What else is Brandon Sanderson working on right now?
On Dec. 8, Sanderson will release The Fires of December's print edition, a standalone story in the Cosmere universe under the Hoid's Travails banner. He is then set to start the third era of the Mistborn series with Ghostbloods, which is currently scheduled for release in December 2028. The next two books in the series will then be released in 2029 and 2030 if Sanderson's tentative plan is accurate.
Outside the realm of books, Sanderson is also handling a number of adaptations of his work at Apple TV Plus. The author made an unprecedented deal with the company earlier this year that gives him unmatched creative control on projects, including final approval. First up in that deal will be a film adaptation of the first Mistborn trilogy. Sanderson is writing the script for the films. There is also a television adaptation of The Stormlight Archive in the works.
