10 Best Anime Characters to Take Trick-Or-Treating

Halloween is my favorite time of year, so much so that I personally start Spooktober in September. Halloween is my favorite time of year, so much so that I personally start Spooktober in September. I challenge myself every day to watch something spooky or disturbingly bloody (like GANTZ ) or be more in control of my fears by playing any of the Silent Hill or Resident Evil games. But Halloween isn’t always about nightmares and existential dread. As a kid, you just wanted to dress up as one of your favorite characters, grab a candy bucket and hit the neighborhood. As an anime fan, that got me wondering: which anime characters make trick-or-treating (and the overall spooky celebrations) more fun, and who would turn a simple candy run into ACTUAL horror? Anya Forger Series: SPY x FAMILY Considering the fact that Anya’s already made an appearance in Crunchyroll's previous trick-or-treating character picks , I think it's only fair we invite her back. Anya has the ultimate trick-or-treating advantage: telepathy. She could read homeowners' minds to avoid the houses running dangerously low on candy or giving out subpar treats. Add her loyal companion Bond, with his ability to see the future, and the duo could put together the perfect Halloween candy adventure. Between telepathy and precognition, these two are basically a broken trick-or-treating combo. Aside from telepathy, Anya has the ability to deploy maximum cuteness. One well-timed “Waku Waku!” could easily score you and your gang a generous handful at any home. That said, she may end up only focusing on candy with peanuts in it, so you'll have to convince her to go for more variety. Frieren Series: Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Frieren has centuries of magical knowledge at her disposal, making her a pretty handy adult to have around on Halloween. She could use magic to light the way, levitate an overflowing candy haul when it gets too heavy, or bring ghosts, skeletons, the actual undead, and other spooky things to life for the ultimate haunted-house experience! There's one problem to look out for when you’re with her. Frieren would absolutely agree to visit “just one more house” and somehow turn trick-or-treating into a side quest that could last 6 months or longer. At least trick-or-treating is a nighttime activity. Anything during the day and Frieren will likely still be asleep. L Series: Death Note Image via Netflix Yeah, no, L isn't going outside for trick-or-treating. But he doesn’t need to. Why waste valuable detective energy walking door-to-door when L could stay home, eat sweets and analyze the neighborhood from his computer? We’ve seen how motivated he is when it comes to sweets. With L on your team, you’ll end up with enough information about the neighborhood you and your friends are planning to hit up. He'd probably determine which houses have full-size chocolate bars, which are handing out raisins, and which homeowner is pretending not to be home despite the lights clearly being on. Himiko Toga Series: My Hero Academia Halloween is practically designed for Himiko. Disguises? Pretending to be somebody else? Her Quirk was meant for this. With Himiko on your team, her Transform Quirk could also become the ultimate trick-or-treating exploit; after all, she already infiltrated the Provisional Hero License Exam wearing someone else’s face. Provided she has someone's blood, Himiko could transform into another person, return to the same house, and collect another round of candy as an entirely “different” trick-or-treater. Just be prepared to share that candy with the League of Villains. That said, showing them some compassion and including them in on the fun may actually be a good thing. Uramichi Omota Series: Life Lessons with Uramichi Oniisan Every group of kids needs one responsible adult, and Uramichi is almost too qualified. He's great with children, ridiculously athletic, strong enough to carry everyone's candy when their little arms give out, and capable of keeping that reassuring TV-presenter smile plastered across his face for hours. Of course, anyone familiar with Uramichi knows that cheerful smile hides a much darker, deeply cynical outlook on adulthood. Between houses, he'd probably start giving the kids unsolicited life lessons about how Halloween candy is temporary, but life's disappointments last forever. Qifrey, Olruggio, and The Apprentices Series: Witch Hat Atelier Since magic in Witch Hat Atelier is created by drawing specific glyphs with magical ink, Qifrey, Olruggio, and the witches-in-training could turn Halloween decorating into the ultimate arts-and-crafts project. Floating ghosts, moving jack-o’-lanterns, decorations that seemingly come alive around unsuspecting trick-or-treaters? They could turn an ordinary front yard into the neighborhood’s must-visit horror house. Heck, if it rains, Olruggio could whip up a spell to make you dry. Of course, Qifrey and Olruggio will likely turn it into a hidden lesson for the girls, each one creating magic with varying results. Coco would still be working out the kinks, for example, while Agott would draw the spell perfectly. Before long, kids would be daring each other to walk up to the door just to see what magical trick was waiting for them next. Koro-sensei Series: Assassination Classroom Koro-sensei might be the MVP when it comes to trick-or-treating adults with his Mach 20 ability. With his incredible speed, he could zip the kids from house to house, carry everyone's overflowing candy bags, and probably cover every candy-giving neighborhood in town before bedtime. No need to carefully map out the neighborhood. This man could potentially get Class 3-E to every generous house in town and still have everyone home at a reasonable hour. Of course, Koro-sensei would inevitably turn Halloween into a lesson along the lines of calculating the most efficient route and comparing the average candy yield per household. But if this "homework" ends with a bucket overflowing with candy, I doubt you’ll hear many complaints from any class. Reigen Arataka Series: Mob Psycho 100 Halloween might just be Reigen's busiest season. Think about it. Undead sightings, ghost decorations, haunted houses? Do you have any idea how much business the Spirits and Such Consultation Office could generate from this? Reigen would spend the evening handing out business cards to trick-or-treaters and offering suspiciously affordable “Halloween Spirit Removal Specials” instead of candy. If an actual spirit shows up? Well... that’s what Mob is for. How does this benefit the trick-or-treaters? Well, they get to meet Reigen, so there’s that! Rudo Series: Gachiakuta Halloween might be the perfect holiday for someone like Rudo, who sees value in the things everyone else throws away. Broken decorations, abandoned costume pieces, busted plastic skeletons? Basically, another man’s trash is another groundling’s treasure. With his ability to turn treasured objects into Vital Instruments, Rudo could potentially transform your neighborhood's Halloween junk into something spectacular. And after all of that? You'd better take Rudo out trick-or-treating, a pastime he has likely never experienced, considering his reaction to candy. He loves candy so much that he wouldn’t be picky about what he got. He’ll also protect any other kids he goes out with, making sure they have the best Halloween they can. Majin Buu Series: Dragon Ball Z This last one is less of an advantage and more of a big warning. DO NOT HAVE MAJIN BUU AROUND FOR HALLOWEEN! Buu has an enormous sweet tooth like Rudo does, but unlike Rudo, he also has the ability to turn people into candy. You may be tempted to have him transform the pesky trick-or-treater who gets the last full-sized candy bar at the house you wanted to check out, but it’s probably not worth the repercussions. Maybe he can stay home and hand out candy instead? Actually, no. He’ll probably just eat it all. Whether it's finding the best candy, creating the ultimate haunted house, or turning a simple night of trick-or-treating into a side quest, we believe these characters could make Halloween even more unforgettable. So enjoy Halloween. May your costumes be spooky, your anime binges be plentiful and your candy quests remain Majin Buu-free.
