What is the difference between a chatbot, model, API, and subscription?

Why ChatGPT is the name of a product, how a model differs from a subscription, and why buying a subscription doesn't necessarily grant API credits? Learn basic concepts with a practical example.

Four Names for Four Different Things

When we say "I use artificial intelligence," we might mean a product, a model, or an application connected to an API. Separating these helps us correctly compare features and costs.

A model is a system that processes input and generates output. The name and version of the model matter; even within the same family, the capabilities and speeds of versions are not identical.

An assistant or chatbot is the environment you work with. In addition to the model, this product may feature search tools, file analysis, memory, or image generation. Not all product capabilities come from the model itself, and they might not be active for all accounts in the same way.

An API is a way for a program to communicate with a service. Instead of typing in a chat window, your application sends requests and receives results. Building a website or automatically processing multiple texts usually requires such a connection.

A subscription plan determines what features and usage limits you have access to within a product. The name of the plan is not the name of the model.

Example: Conversation vs. Automated Processing

To summarize a text, you might enter it into an assistant's interface. However, for a website that constantly receives and processes news, the application needs to be able to send requests without manual intervention; this is the use case for an API.

Regarding OpenAI, the cost and billing of ChatGPT subscriptions and API usage are separate. Therefore, purchasing a chat subscription does not mean receiving that same amount of credit in the API. In other services as well, you must read the terms of that specific provider; do not assume based on a similar name.

What Does Freemium Mean?

"Freemium" or free + paid means there is a basic free tier, and certain features or higher limits cost money. This term does not state which feature is free or how much you can use. A "free trial period" is also different: it might only be for a limited time.

On the other hand, "downloadable weights" refer to the ability to access the model file. Licensing, commercial use, and running costs are separate issues; free download does not necessarily mean free execution or unconditional licensing.

What Should We Write Down Before Choosing?

Create a simple table: required task, environment of use, necessary features, consumption limit, and payment method. For example, "three files a week in a chat interface" does not have the same requirements as "daily automated processing of hundreds of texts."

If you need a specific feature like web search, image reading, or table analysis, check its presence in that exact product and account. A model's capability in API documentation does not guarantee that the same option is active in all versions of an app.

Exercise: Write a sentence for your own work: "I need … , via … , with about … usage." Then read the list of models and assistants using this exact criteria.
