What Blizzard records did World of Warcraft Forever break?

According to a post shared on X and Bluesky, World of Warcraft Forever brought the highest peak concurrent player counts of any World of Warcraft-related launch ever, as well as the highest number of returning players. It seems like the reimagining of the MMO was very successful at not only attracting a lot of new people to play the game for the first time, but drawing people back in who hadn't played in years.

Congratulations everyone, you made HISTORY! WoW: Forever has achieved: 🔹The biggest launch in WoW history by peak concurrent players 🔹The highest number of returning players in WoW history This is all because of you, the players. From all of us, THANK YOU!

World of Warcraft Forever finds a new middle ground between the Classic and modern versions of the MMO. It has more modern-looking visuals and even features like controller support, but stripped the game back down to its original 2004 launch content and built back up from there.

Clearly, this mix of old-school and new-school really resonated with players, as it seems to be doing better than Classic's launch or any new expansion has at drawing players to the game and getting them to stick around. Blizzard Entertainment does not share subscriber numbers publicly anymore, so we may never learn the exact number of people Forever got to subscribe.

World of Warcraft Forever is currently available on Windows PC through the standard World of Warcraft subscription. Blizzard plans to support it with new content for the foreseeable future, with associate production director Clayton Stone recently telling Bloomberg that “We want to go on this journey as long as players want to go with us. There are so many theories about unfinished World of Warcraft — unfinished raids, unfinished zones, unfinished dungeons, stories and adventures for players to go on.”
