Now that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time's Nintendo Switch 2 remake has been out for a couple of days, people are already looking for secrets tucked away within the game through datamining. One of the biggest discoveries from that is that Master Quest, which was missing from the remake at release, could be in the works.
Is a Master Quest mode coming to Ocarina of Time for Switch 2?
As Nintendo Everything reported, Bluesky user MrCheeze first discovered references to Master Quest within the game's files on Nov. 6. Then, on Nov. 7, X user OatmealDome added fuel to the fire by claiming that the Master Quest game files needed to be unlocked with DLC, not a simple update. That suggests that Nintendo is planning DLC for this new version of Ocarina of Time, although nothing like that has been announced yet.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Master Quest was first released as a bonus disc included with some copies of The Wind Waker on GameCube, and it makes the classic Nintendo 64 game substantially harder. Master Quest was unlockable after beating Ocarina of Time's 3DS remake once, but it was entirely missing from the Switch 2 remake at release. These datamines confirm that references to Master Quest exist within the remake's code, though, so it seems quite likely that Nintendo would like to bring it to this new remake at some point.
Nintendo has not teased Master Quest publicly yet, though series producer Eiji Aonuma's response to IGN when asked about Master Quest certainly hinted at the possibility that it would be worked on post-launch. "So certainly anytime that we release a game, if there’s an opportunity for the devs to consider what might come in the future, we want to leave that possibility open to them and support their interests," Aonuma teased.
The remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is available now on Nintendo Switch 2.
