Chinese developer S-GAME has proudly announced on X that its debut console game, Phantom Blade Zero, has already sold over 4 million units across PlayStation 5 and PC in just 72 hours. The infographic also highlights the game's strong user reception, as evidenced by Metacritic scores (88 on PC, 93 on PS5), Steam (89%), and the PlayStation Store (4.71/5).
The game also enjoyed very favorable reception from critics, with Metacritic scores of 87 on PS5 and 88 on PC. Our own 10 out of 10 review score contributes to the latter, with Francesco De Meo calling it one of the best action RPGs of the generation:
Phantom Blade Zero is a genre-defining game that stands as one of the best current-generation titles to date. Effortlessly marrying the fluidity of a combat system that masterfully balances offense and defense with tight world design, staggering weapon variety, and some of the most memorable boss fights in recent memory, S-Game has delivered a masterpiece with its first major PC and console release that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the absolute peak of the genre.
On Steam, Phantom Blade Zero reached a concurrent peak of 833K players during the weekend, which was just enough to place it in the All-Time Top 10 chart, just above Battlefield 6 and below Baldur's Gate 3. Black Myth: Wukong, however, peaked at three times the number (2.4 million users).
Back in August, just days after pre-orders opened, Rhys Elliott from Alinea Analytics estimated that Phantom Blade Zero had already sold 300K units on Steam alone, generating $14.5 million in revenue, while also leading the year's Steam wishlist chart with 1.6 million users. At the time, that put it at 73% of Black Myth: Wukong's pre-launch pace on Steam, and 6.4x ahead of Wuchang: Fallen Feathers.
For reference, Black Myth: Wukong sold 10 million units in its first three days back in August 2024, also across PlayStation 5 and PC. That means Phantom Blade Zero has reached roughly 40% of Wukong's launch pace, though it's worth noting the two comparisons aren't quite like-for-like, since Alinea's pre-launch figures only covered Steam.
But as I wrote back in August, Phantom Blade Zero doesn't really need to match Wukong's record-breaking numbers. Selling over 4 million units in 72 hours, with critical and user reception this strong, is a phenomenal result for a studio launching its first major PC and console game, and with word of mouth likely to keep building, there is every reason to expect it will keep climbing for a while yet.
