GTA 6 Could Cost “Tens of Thousands Of Dollars” in Tokens To Develop Unofficial PC Port, Yet Former Rockstar Tech Director Believes It Will Be Attempted

GTA 6, much like Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, will launch on PC some time after its PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S launch. However, the rise of generative AI that is making it extremely easy for anyone to port games to PC or improve emulation is likely going to pressure the studio and its parent company Take-Two Interactive into releasing the game officially on PC sooner than expected, as former Rockstar North technical director Obbe Vermeij believes some will cross any hurdle to get it on PC as soon as possible, even if it would cost tens of thousands of dollars in tokens.

"It really has changed the world," Vermeij said to Rock Paper Shotgun in a fresh interview, "and I think I would be concerned, if I was Rockstar, that somebody would just take the PS5 version and get AI to change it to PC, which won't be won't be as good as their effort, but it could still also hurt their sales. So, I wouldn't be surprised if there was an effort to get [the releases] a little bit closer together. Obviously, I don't really know what they're thinking."

As GTA 6 is setting out to be an incredibly complex production, an AI-powered PC port won't be an easy feat. Still, Obbe Vermeij believes current tools are probably capable of delivering this port, but at a tremendously high cost in terms of time and money. "It will take a long time. It actually, physically takes hours and hours and hours to do these things. And it will take a bunch of tokens and everything, so it would probably cost like, tens of thousands of dollars in tokens. But like, you know, if it's GTA, I think people are gonna try it," Vermeij said.

Besides being able to play GTA 6 on PC ahead of an official port with features not available on consoles such as NVIDIA DLSS 5, there could be another reason that could motivate many to release something that would require an unreasonable effort to produce: to spite Sony. In the past few months, the Japanese company had made a series of rather unpopular decisions, such as sunsetting disc production in 2028, fueling the quick development of the KyTyPS5 emulator and unofficial ports of games still stuck on PlayStation consoles, such as FromSoftware's Bloodborne.

Even so, with PlayStation engaging in a firmware war against jailbreakers to prevent GTA 6 from being dumped at launch, chances of the game being playable in some form on PC as soon as it launches like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time are slim. As such, players will have no choice but to play the game on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S to enjoy what is increasingly looking like one of the most advanced open-world games to date.
