FromSoftware's Bloodborne Is Still Selling Hundreds of Thousands of Copies, Over a Decade After Launch

All FromSoftware games rule, but Bloodborne has the coolest vibes. You’re dripping in Victorian garb, flanked by gothic architecture, and stalked by Lovecraftian terrors across cobbled streets that run red with each sword swing, wielding weapons that shift and transform mid-combo, parrying with a shotgun — it’s just sick. Perhaps it shouldn't come as a surprise, then, that it's still selling hundreds of thousands of copies a year despite being over a decade old.

According to Alinea Analytics estimates, the PS4 exclusive has reportedly sold more than 251,000 copies this year alone. Analyst Rhys Elliott took to social media to note that the game has sold to an estimated 10.4 million copies since going on sale in March 2015, generating around $317 million in revenue.

On top of the impressive sales, an estimated half a million played Bloodborne in October through PS Plus, Sony’s video game subscription service. Bloodborne continues to be hugely popular among fans of FromSoftware games, the data suggests. Of those nearly 500,000 players, 12% also played Elden Ring this month, while 6% also played Dark Souls 3 and 5% also played Sekiro. “There’s a cohort of gamers who are always bouncing between different From games. Can’t blame them, especially with this one," Elliott said.

Bloodborne is one of the few PS4 exclusives that never got a PS5 update and is still (officially at least) locked at 30fps, despite public demand for a Bloodborne remaster. Modders have managed to get Bloodborne running at 120fps on higher resolutions than previously possible on PS5, however.

The now-shuttered Bluepoint, the studio behind the successful Shadow of the Colossus and Demon's Souls remakes, reportedly pitched a Bloodborne remake last year that was rejected not by Sony, as many had thought, but by FromSoftware itself.

Bloodborne's status has long been in limbo, with various individuals with ties to the project sharing conflicting thoughts on what can be made of it. Back in 2024, FromSoftware director Hidetaka Miyazaki said it was "not in my place" to talk about a Bloodborne remake because FromSoftware does not own the IP. He also told Eurogamer at the time that the game would benefit from a release on modern hardware.

Then, the following year, PlayStation's Shuhei Yoshida offered a theory on KindaFunny as to what was going on with Bloodborne that might have matched up with what happened to Bluepoint's pitch: "Bloodborne has always been the most asked thing. And people wonder why we haven’t really done anything, even an update or a remaster. Should be easy, right? The company is known for doing so many remasters, right, some people get frustrated.

"I have only my personal theory to that situation. I left first-party so I don’t know what’s going on, but my theory is, you know because I remember, you know, Miyazaki-san really, really loved Bloodborne, you know, what he created. So I think he is interested, but he’s so successful and he’s so busy, so he doesn’t want, he cannot do himself, but he does not want anyone else to touch it. So that’s my theory. And the PlayStation team respect his wish. So that’s my guess, right? Theory. I am not revealing any secret information, to be clear."

There are some signs of life, though. Sony announced an R-rated animated Bloodborne movie earlier this year, produced by YouTuber JackSepticEye.

As for FromSoftware itself, it's gearing up to launch the recently delayed Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, The Duskbloods, next year. Its most recent game is co-op spinoff Elden Ring: Nightreign. Miyazaki recently reassured fans that the developer is still focused on single-player games. In December 2024, Miyazaki said FromSoftware was not considering making Elden Ring 2, but wouldn't shut down the possibility in the future. If not, there is an Elden Ring movie in the works.
