Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown released last week on PC and consoles, and all those who started venturing into the unknown on their ship have definitely noticed how the expansion is not as polished as the base game. Pearl Abyss was well aware of this, launching a multitude of minor patches and hotfixes to address the most glaring issues. Thankfully, one of the biggest issues - the significant performance drops in some areas - is starting to get addressed in patch 2.04.08.
"Improved framerate drops in certain areas," is the very first improvement listed on the official patch notes shared by Pearl Abyss today. "We will continue to improve framerate drops that occur in certain situations and during certain content," the Korean developer added to highlight how they will continue to monitor and improve the issue.
As I have spent a good 20 hours playing through the expansion for my review, which will go live in the next few days on PC, I did not encounter any massive performance drops on PC, although I did notice that performance is generally not as stable as it is on the main continent of Pywel. On consoles, however, users have reported significant performance issues, so this patch should have the greatest impact on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Besides addressing performance issues, the new Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown patch fixes crashing, quest, and naval gameplay issues, including a very immersion-breaking issue where the ship's wheel did not rotate while steering the ship. The full details can be found in the official patch notes.
While my final verdict is still on hold as I continue to explore the new areas, I can already say that Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown is more than worth the money for those who loved the base game, especially those who got invested in the story after the Enhanced release. The three new epilogue questlines are short, but they are entertaining enough, making Damiane and Oongka feel more like characters and not some gameplay gimmicks thrown in just to spice up the game's combat in certain scenarios.
